Add a NoticeFrancis Zammit Dimech, a distinguished Maltese statesman, lawyer, and academic, passed away on April 21, 2025, at the age of 70 following a prolonged battle with cancer. At the time of his passing, he was serving as the Acting President of the Republic of Malta, a role that capped a lifetime of public service to his nation.
Born on October 23, 1954, in St. Julian's, Zammit Dimech dedicated decades to national and European politics. Elected to Malta’s Parliament in 1987, he served continuously until 2013, holding several key cabinet positions over the years, including Minister for Transport and Communications, Environment, Tourism and Culture, and Foreign Affairs. In 2017, he was appointed as a Member of the European Parliament, representing Malta until 2019.
Zammit Dimech was also a former Secretary General of the Partit Nazzjonalista and a committed academic, lecturing in European media law at the University of Malta. His articulate voice and steady hand left an enduring impact on Maltese policy and public life.
A Final Farewell to Francis Zammit Dimech will be held on Thursday, 24th April, at 2pm at the Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Balluta.
No flowers by request but donations to Puttinu Cares will be appreciated.
Ahead of the ceremony, members of the public are invited to pay their respects at the Partit Nazzjonalista headquarters, Dar Ċentrali, where a Book of Condolences is available. The headquarters will be open Tuesday from 12pm to 8pm and Wednesday from 9am to 8pm.
Following the celebration of his life, the funeral cortege will pass in front of Dar Ċentrali as a final tribute to his decades of dedication to the Nationalist Party and the Maltese people.
